The story behind the term 'Alibaug se aaya hai kya.'

Alibaug was the happening place before 'Dil Chahta hai' was released

The term "Alibaug se aaya hai kya,' is making news now, due to the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that has been filed by Rajendra Thakur, a resident of Satirje village of Mapgaon in Alibaug. Rajendra's father also happens to be former Congress MLA.

Rajendra claims that the phrase is ‘unfair’ and ‘humiliating’ as it projects people of Alibaug as ‘illiterates’. “Alibaug is bestowed with nature with scenic beauty. In spite of having such a rich background full of history, culture, industry, tourism, medical facilities, nature and education, it is highly objectionable to ridicule the people of Alibaug by projecting them as illiterates, who do not have common sense,” the plea said.

“Every time the petitioner hears this dialogue, he gets hurt sentimentally. This phrase always makes an adverse emotional impact on the petitioner and every person of Alibaug,” it said. The plea is scheduled to be taken up for hearing after two weeks. It would heard before a Bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice N.M. Jamdar.

However, one of the story behind the term goes back to decades. It was the period before the release of cult classic movie, 'Dil Chahta hai.' Before the release of the movie, Alibaug was like Goa to people. It was closer from Mumbai, alcohol was cheap and there were empty beaches as well.

So teenagers used to take short weekend trips to Alibaug, party all night and return on Sunday. It is believed that most of these people would still be under the influence of alcohol while returning. That's when 'Alibaug se aaya hai kya' became a term. It is usually used in an argument where a person is trying to fool you.
