JioMart - A failed experiment?

May 31, 2020 6

Reliance Industry's online grocery service, JioMart, launched amid pomp and glory in more than 200 towns all across India on 24th May. Essentially making the $2.2 billion Antilla, the world's biggest Kirana store. The project which launched last month in Mumbai also included the local Kirana stores. But ever since the nationwide launch, these stores have been totally out of the picture.

Unsatisfied with just excluding the local Kirana, Reliance is playing mind games with their customers as well. Several social media websites are proof that the majority of customers are being played with and the unpreparedness of a certain businessman has come to the forefront. The hashtag '#jiomartscam' is a blatant reminder of the prevailing troubles faced by the customers.

Personal examples set aside, JioMart has set a benchmark of cheating their customers. These antics include but aren't limited to, delivery of soiled products, delivery of wrong products, non-delivery of particular products, NO DELIVERY (yes, really!), mishandling of products, untimely delivery of the products, no clarification of the order on the website, so on and so forth.

Their employees, too, are being exploited by them. They have put their life on the line by working in such a tough period from 7 AM to 12 PM, that's right! The brunt of this unpreparedness is being borne by workers and managers of all the different warehouses and superstores belonging to Reliance.

A look at some Twitter posts will show just how much trouble the customers are going through. All because of JioMart.

Despite having paid for the products beforehand, there has been no confirmation as to when or IF the customer will ever receive their order. I, personally, am a victim of this unpreparedness.

Such is the magnitude of money being scammed out from the customers, that JioMart could very well become one of the biggest scams to hit this country. And of course, with so many problems, comes Reliance's ever-present philosophy of giving huge discounts to gain more customers.

I don't understand why would anyone start something so big with so little preparation. Oh wait, I know why. MONEY!

The Two Sides of the Venezuelan Crisis

May 16, 2019 2
People on the streets of Caracas in support of Juan Gaido. Photo Credit - AFP
Did you know that that 1 Indian Rupee (INR) equals to 74.9 Venezuelan Bolivar (VES) and 1 United States Dollar (USD) equals to 5263 Venezuelan Bolivar (VES)? Why is there such a huge difference in currency? What are the reasons for the problems faced by the people of Venezuela? Let's find out the two sides of this crisis.

Venezuela is going through a very big crisis and we ought to know all about it. One other thing that you may want to know about it is that there are two sides to the story and what you may have heard, seen or read may be influenced by what a particular media outlet wants you to soak in.

Nicolas Maduro with the Army. Photo Credit - Reuters
One side talks about how Hugo Chavez got the reigns of this oil-rich nation and how he used his powers to silence the opposition and gain control until his death in 2013. The reigns were now passed onto Nicolas Maduro under whom the Venezuelan people suffered even more and who is a dictator of sorts and has the backing of the military. It also talks about how Uncle Sam (USA) siding with democracy wants Juan Guaido, the opposition leader, to take away the power from Maduro and assume the presidency.

The other side talks about how Hugo Chavez won elections in 1998 by a landfall. During that time, Venezuela was the richest Latin-America country and USA had their eyes set on it. However, due to non-co-operation of the Chavez government, the USA started applying sanctions on the Venezuelan government. This, in turn, resulted in the loss of billions of dollars and gave way to the present situation of the country. This is because the ruling government used oil as a means to counter US hegemony in Latin-America.

What we see from this entire hullabaloo is how the USA has influenced media from all across the world into believing and portraying what they believe is right. They have portrayed Juan Guaido as a young Barack Obama and who is very capable of ruling the nation of Venezuela. There is nothing wrong with that, but the way that some media houses refuse to showcase the other side of the issue is alarming. The situation going on in Venezuela has also resulted in wide-range migration of locals because of lack of food and other basic amenities.

There is no guarantee as to what will happen to the people because what everyone cares about is their personal gain and not about the welfare of the people. And this is the reason why the aforementioned issue has turned out to be a political one rather than a humanitarian one.

Russia Plane Crash : 41 people dead

May 06, 2019 0
Image Source - Associated Press (AP)
41 people have died after a Russian plane burst into flames due to crashing while making an emergency landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport. The plane had 73 passengers and 5 crew members. Amongst the dead are two children. The event took place on Sunday.

Television footage showed the Sukhoi Superjet-100 making the crash landing at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport with much of the rear part of the plane engulfed in flames. The video also showed passengers leaping out of the burning plane onto an inflatable slide.

Initial reports suggested that an emergency on board had forced the plane into turning back after takeoff. Russia's Interfax news agency had reported that a 'lightning strike' resulting in
a 'loss of communication' had led to the decision to return to Sheremetyevo. No official cause has been provided for the disaster. Russia's Investigative Committee has launched an investigation into this disaster.

The Cyclonic Storm 'Fani'

May 06, 2019 0
Image Source - Associated Press (AP)
Cyclone Fani originated from the western Sumatra region in the Indian Ocean on 26th April and made its way to India. It made landfall in the state of Odisha on 3rd May and wreaked havoc amongst all of the 46 million inhabitants of the state. The cyclone has claimed more than 30 deaths until now with unofficial figures going up to 45. Considering the velocity and the fierce nature of the cyclone, the death toll is minimal, owing to the preparedness displayed by the Indian Government and the people. The cyclone could have caused unimaginable destruction. Even the UN has praised India's response in the face of the storm.

Fani had reached its peak intensity on 2nd May and was classified as a Category-4 major hurricane. Luckily, it had weakened before making landfall and hit Odisha with speeds of up to 175 kilometres per hour with heavy rainfall. The storm later went on to wreak havoc in West Bengal. In its last stage, it entered Bangladesh, where it claimed about 14 lives. Odisha Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, said that Cyclone Fani was one of the rarest storms to hit the Indian Subcontinent and he also claimed that the state had carried out 'the biggest human evacuation in history'.

Last week, the Centre had released Rs 1000 crore for aiding the evacuation process and now it has released an additional amount of Rs 1000 crore for the state. Denis McClean, a spokesperson for the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) said, "The almost pinpoint accuracy of the early warnings from the Indian Meteorological Department had enabled the authorities to conduct a well-targeted evacuation plan, which had involved moving more than one million people into storm shelters," The transport systems too were coordinating with each other to ensure that the people stuck in the afflicted areas don't have to go through much trouble. The following states have offered a contribution to Odisha; Tamil Nadu - Rs 10 crore, Maharashtra - Rs 10 crore, Uttar Pradesh - Rs 10 crore, Gujarat - Rs 5 crore and Chhattisgarh - Rs 11 crore.

It is at times like these that we should come together in union and work for the greater good.

Update: 140 dead, over 500 injured in six explosions on Easter

April 21, 2019 0

Here are the updates from Sri Lanka:
  • In St. Sebastian's in Katuwapitiya Colombo, more than 50 people had been killed.
  • Media reported 25 people were also killed in the attack on a church in Batticaloa in Eastern Province.
  • Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe condemns the cowardly attack.

India stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka, says PM Modi

Sri Lanka's police chief made a nationwide alert 10 days before Sunday's bomb attacks in the country that suicide bombers planned to hit "prominent churches", according to the warning seen by AFP.

"A foreign intelligence agency has reported that the NTJ (National Thowheeth Jama'ath) is planning to carry out suicide attacks targeting prominent churches as well as the Indian high commission in Colombo," said the alert.

The NTJ is a radical Muslim group in Sri Lanka that came to notice last year when it was linked to the vandalization of Buddhist statues.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attacks yet. The country was at war for decades with Tamil separatists during which bomb blasts in the capital were common.

129 Dead and 300 injured in the multiple bomb blasts in high-end hotels and churches

April 21, 2019 0

129 people killed and hundreds injured after explosions in three churches and three hotels in and around the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

The blasts hit several high-end hotels and a church in Colombo, while two other churches were targeted outside Colombo, Sri Lanka police told news agency AFP.

The explosions happened at around 8:45 am local time. The Sri Lankan army has deployed 200 troops to ensure security.

The Sri Lanka government has called an emergency meeting. The Minister of Economic Reforms and Public Distribution, Harsha de Silva, said in a tweet. "Emergency meeting called in a few minutes. Rescue operations underway," he tweeted.

St Anthony's Church in Colombo and St Sebastian's Church at Katuwapitiya in the town of Negombo reported the first explosions.

"A bomb attack to our church, please come and help if your family members are there," read a post in English on the Facebook page of the St Sebastian's Church.

Soon after the initial reports, four other blasts were confirmed by the police. Three of those were at hotels, while another was reported from a church in the town of Batticaloa.

An official at the Batticaloa hospital told AFP more than 300 people had been admitted with injuries following the blast there.

The blasts hit the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, the Shangri-La and the Kingsbury in Colombo.

At least one of the victims was killed in Colombo's Cinnamon Grand Hotel, near the prime minister's official residence, where the blast ripped through a restaurant, a hotel official told AFP.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, responding to the explosions, said that she is in close touch with the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo and that the government was closely monitoring the situation in the neighboring country.

The Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka has tweeted helpline numbers for anyone requiring assistance.

This is the biggest attack on Sri Lanka of this manner in several years. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. The government has declared two days' holiday in schools in Sri Lanka after the blasts shocked the nation on Sunday.

On April 5, Pakistan had announced that it will be releasing 360 Indian prisoners upon completion of their sentences, starting April 8.

The 100 Indian fishermen that Pakistan released, arrived at Gujarat's Vadodara on 11th April after being released through Attari-Wagah border earlier that week.

These fishermen are from the state's Veraval region and were caught by Pakistan coast guard for crossing the international sea borders.

Ramesh Kumar, Assistant Director, Fisheries Department said, "These fishermen were released from Pakistan on April 8. Our team had gone to Amritsar to receive them and brought them here by a train."

The second batch of  the 360 Indian fishermen were released on Saturday. The Indian prisoners that Pakistan has promised to set free will be released in four phases this month.

The fishermen, who were released from Malir Jail in Karachi on Saturday, were being taken to Lahore by train, officials said. They will be handed over to the Indian authorities at the Wagah border on Monday.

Speaking to ANI, one of the fishermen said, "Many of us accidentally cross the border while some go to that side knowingly for catching fish. I was in Pakistan for about 17 months. We were always confined in a particular cell and were never allowed to venture out. We were clearly told to stay in the definite cell for our own safety."

Another fisherman, Vikram, said, "I was caught accidentally while we were sleeping on the boat. The boat accidentally crossed the border.

They had been arrested for fishing illegally in Pakistani waters. Another 100 will be freed on April 22 and the rest on April 29.

Japan drops explosive on an asteroid to study it

Friday morning saw Japan detonate a small explosive on the asteroid 'Ryugu'. The goal was to create a crater which will be studied later to better understand how the planets were formed in the early solar system. The Hayabusa-2, Japan's spacecraft is said to have carried out the operation on 'Ryugu, an asteroid that is a remnant of the early solar system and may be about 4.5 billion years old. This asteroid is located between the Earth and Mars.

The explosive device, called the Small Carry-on Impactor (SCI), was released from Hayabusa-2. The SCI, a 14kg conical container, was packed with plastic explosive intended to punch a 10m-wide hole in the asteroid. The probe also left behind a camera to observe the explosion and send back a few photographs to Earth.

Friday's mission was the riskiest one yet for Hayabusa-2, as it also had to get away from the point of impact in order to avoid getting hit from the flying shards of the blast. Earlier, Hayabusa-2 had landed on 'Ryugu' in February this year and fired a bullet into its surface for further research.

In this growing era of digital reading, book lovers shine brightly in the Netherlands

April 06, 2019 0

In a move that the rest of the world should pay heed too, Netherlands has decided to offer the Dutch book readers free rail travel across the weekend as part of their annual book week celebrations. ‘Boekenweek’ is an annual celebration of Dutch Literature, held in March since 1932. A ‘book ball’ marks the beginning of this festival, which is followed with events such as book signings, debates and literary sessions across the nation.

Traditionally, a well-known author is asked to write a book as part of the ‘Boekenweek’. Copies of this book are given away during the entirety of the celebration. The Dutch state railway company has been the sponsor of this event and they have been offering free rail travel as a promotion since the last 18 years.

This is a very important step for preserving the rich heritage of books. The people have started to lose the importance of the values that a book provides. Initiatives such as these help in making the people realise the importance of a book and why they should be part of our everyday life. Books enrich a life.

Facebook to come up with new section by end of 2019

April 04, 2019 0

As a solution to fake news or yellow journalism, Facebook will be launching a new section for "high quality" and "trustworthy" news, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said earlier this week. Reportedly, it is also known from a person familiar with the conversation that executives have discussed possibly launching it by the end of 2019.

The new section will be developed on the same lines of existing "Watch" tab, a section on the platform that hosts videos and original programming. It would be separate from the general News Feed section which allows people to browse on the site.

"Because that has started to grow really quickly, and that's a lot of video that now people use through our services, we've decided that there really is an opportunity to do something like that with news as well," Zuckerberg said in the discussion with Mathias Döpfner, chief executive of news publisher Axel Springer.

"So, of course anything that we do is going to be personalized, but there's a question I have, which is, what is the right level of curation that we should have in order to — we're not going to have journalists making news — but I think what we want to do is make sure that this is a product that can get people high quality news, right?" he added.

However, according to reports in CNN, Facebook might not be hiring journalist to make original content for the site, but it is known that a small team of journalist will be made to curate the news in new section.

Regarding the new feature, Zuckerberg focused on three major points. One, he wants to build the product in a "consultive way" in which "experts in the field" have the opportunity to provide feedback as well. Two, improvement of monetization part for publishers from News Feed. And third, build an "online ecosystem" in which "new types of journalism can thrive."

Identifying authorised porters made easier by Western Railways

April 03, 2019 0

To avoid being cheated by fake porters on railway stations, the Western Railways have come up with a solution. Starting from Surat, the authorised porters will have QR code based on their identity. This will help the travelers to identify the right porter and not get overpriced.

Once it is successful in Surat, the rule will be implemented on other major stations with huge footfall as well. When it comes to Mumbai locals, it is always the Western Railways that brings about technological advances. Now with this step, it is happening nation wide as well.

Kurla bridge shutdown causes chaos and angst amongst commuters

April 03, 2019 0

Mornings are not a good time for the people travelling from or to Kurla station as two bridges are shut, which is leading to panic and confusion amongst the commuters. The cause of this confusion was attributed to inadequate preparedness and inability to give prior notice to the public.

People have taken to ‘Twitter’, the social networking website, to express their anger and displeasure.

However, by the time of the evening rush hour, some order was restored on Tuesday after the Central Railway GM and the local Assistant Municipal Commissioner got involved with this situation. The work is still ongoing and the commuters still have to go through a lot of trouble.

The Kurla station has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. Last month, a video had gone viral about a food stall vendor preparing lemon juice with a very unhygienic manner. That forced the Central Railway to seal the food stall.

With foot-over-bridges being a major concern for the railways and the BMC, regular maintenance and strengthening of bridges all over the city is a must.
