PM Narendra Modi's oath-taking ceremony : Attendees and Preparation

May 30, 2019 0

Words - Saurabh Pandey

The most awaited moment of the world's largest democracy has now arrived. Narendra Modi will be sworn in as the Prime Minister of the world's largest democratic country today. People showed their beliefs towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi as they came out and voted in huge numbers and they made sure that they voted not the candidate but they voted for PM Modi.

By having a huge mandate, one-sided BJP became the single largest party with NDA raking in up to 353 Lok Sabha seats in the assembly which made sure that the opposition does not move to more than two-digit numbers, while the UPA got less than 100 seats in the 17th Loksabha Election.

Although the election proved to be the mega event of the year, today, the biggest event will take place where Narendra Modi will be sworn in as the Prime Minister for the second time. Due to the soaring popularity of PM Narendra Modi all across the world, the guest list is also as much big as the mandate. Today, all eyes will be on India to see their most popular leader sworn in as PM.

The guests which will be present for the swearing-in ceremony are the BIMSTEC countries (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) and they have confirmed their presence. On the other hand, Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov have confirmed their participation at the event.

President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister of Nepal K P Sharma Oli have confirmed their participation at the ceremony. President of Myanmar, U Win Myint and Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering have also confirmed their presence at the event. From Thailand, the Special Envoy Grisada Boonrach will represent the country at the ceremony.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, besides former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, will also attend the event as per sources.

This will be the first time ever that Rashtrapati Bhavan will be having more than 8000 guests for the ceremony where earlier the total number of guests was around 4500 to 5000. Coming to the cooking section, the chefs at the Rashtrapati Bhavan are preparing a special dal which is known as Dal Raisina which takes around 48 hours to cook. President Ram Nath Kovind has invited many VVIP delegates which include the BIMSTEC leaders as well as 40 Indian VVIPs, including the Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu. The oath-taking ceremony will start by 7:00 pm and will continue up to 8:30 pm.  After the ceremony gets over, the dinner for delegates and dignitaries will start by 9:00 pm in the evening.

Nehru's Vision for India

May 27, 2019 0

Words - Asmita Yadav

Today is the death anniversary of India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. On his death anniversary, we will discuss his role as the Architect of India and the causes of his death.

India’s Architect

Nehru elaborated the policies of the Congress and a future Indian nation in 1929. All these policies formed the core of the "Fundamental Rights and Economic Policy" resolution drafted by Nehru in 1929–31 and were ratified in 1931 by the Congress party session at Karachi chaired by Vallabhbhai Patel. In the 1930s, the Congress Socialist Party group was formed within the INC under the able leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan, Narendra Deo and others. Nehru, however, never joined the group but did act as a bridge between them and Gandhi. He had the support of the left-wing Congressmen Maulana Azad and Subhas Chandra Bose. The trio combined to oust Dr Prasad as Congress President in 1936. Nehru was elected in his place and held the presidency for two years (1936–37).
After the fall of Bose from the mainstream Indian politics because of his support of violence in driving the British out of India, the power struggle between the socialists and conservatives balanced out. However, Sardar Patel died in 1950, leaving Nehru as the sole remaining iconic national leader, and soon the situation became such that Nehru was able to implement many of his basic policies without hindrance. During Nehru's second term as general secretary of the Congress, he proposed certain resolutions concerning the foreign policy of India. From that time onwards, he was given carte blanche in framing the foreign policy of any future Indian nation. He developed good relations with governments all over the world. He firmly placed India on the side of democracy and freedom during a time when the world was under the threat of fascism. He was also given the responsibility of planning the economy of a future India. He appointed the National Planning Commission in 1938 to help in framing such policies. However, many of the plans framed by Nehru and his colleagues would later come undone with the unexpected partition of India in 1947.

Death
There were four known assassination attempts on Nehru. The first attempt on his life was during partition in 1947 while he was visiting North-West Frontier Province (now in Pakistan) in a car. The second one was by a knife-wielding rickshaw-puller in Maharashtra in 1955. The third one happened in Bombay (now Maharashtra) in 1956. The fourth one was a failed bombing attempt on train tracks in Maharashtra in 1961. Despite threats to his life, Nehru despised having too much security around him and did not like to disrupt traffic due to his movement.
Nehru's health began declining steadily after 1962, and he spent months recuperating in Kashmir throughout 1963. Some historians attribute this dramatic decline to his surprise and chagrin over the Sino-Indian War, which he perceived as a betrayal of trust. Upon his return from Dehradun on 26 May 1964 he was feeling quite comfortable and went to bed at about 23:30 as usual, he had a restful night until about 06:30. As soon as he returned from the bathroom, Nehru complained of pain in the back. He spoke to the doctors who attended on him for a brief while and almost immediately Nehru collapsed. He remained unconscious until he died. His death was announced to the Lok Sabha at 14:00 local time on 27 May 1964 (same day). The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack. Draped in the Indian national Tri-colour flag the body of Jawaharlal Nehru was placed for public viewing. "Raghupati Raghava Rajaram" was chanted as the body was placed on the platform. On 28 May, Nehru was cremated in accordance with Hindu rites at the Shantivan on the banks of the Yamuna, witnessed by 1.5 million mourners who had flocked onto the streets of Delhi and the cremation grounds.
Nehru, the man and politician made such a powerful imprint on India that his death on 27 May 1964, left India with no clear political heir to his leadership (later Lal Bahadur Shastri succeeded him as the Prime Minister). The death was announced to the Indian parliament in words similar to Nehru's own at the time of Gandhi's assassination: "The light is out."

India’s democracy hanging on thin thread

May 05, 2019 3

As we know India is a democratic country and in a democracy, there are two most important things. One, the ruling party and the opposition party should function side by side and second, the fourth pillar of democracy should have a free hand. And, if that’s not the case, then it’s not a democracy.

The opposition's main role is to question the government and hold them accountable to the public. They should also act to discourage the party in power from acting against the interests of the country and the common man. But, the opposition too needs to understand that if they are the ones who have the first right to criticize the government then they should also be the first one to praise the government for their good work, a quality which is lacking in today's opposition.

And the same goes to the ruling party. Their main job is to understand what the opposition is talking about and why are they criticizing. They need to solve it instead of taking an effort to shut the opposition’s mouth. They need to understand that the real essence of democracy is that people should ask a question without any fear. But in today's government, they are lacking this.

The fourth pillar of democracy, the media, should have a free hand. But that doesn't mean they are above the rules and regulations. They should not ideally be controlled by any political party or business organization and should get a free hand to work unbiased. The media should also understand that their main work is to make people aware of the various social, political and economical activities happening in the country and around the world. They should focus on these things instead of backing a particular political party or business organization. The media is the one who shapes a healthy democracy as it is the backbone of democracy. But in today's time, it seems to be on a ventilator.

If we want democracy to survive; our
पक्ष - विपक्ष and पत्रकारिता (Government - Opposition and Media) need to understand their role and follow it properly.

The complicated relation of caste and politics

April 15, 2019 9

Words - Asmita Yadav
Have you ever thought why caste is still a key point in India especially when it comes to politics?

In India, religion and caste-based politics are still prevalent. Some of the highlighted topics are Ram Mandir, Babri Masjid, Hindu, Muslim, Minority, Majority, Ali-Bajrangbali. They managed to be fairly successfu with their agendas. In this article, we will try to answer a few questions based on caste politics.

How does a politician practice caste politics?
Mainly, the political party first observes that which religion or caste is in the majority in a particular area and then they give the election ticket to the candidate who belongs from the same religion/caste. This increases the chance of their victory.

2014 was marked as a major twist in Indian politics where the BJP gained more than 400 seats in General Lok Sabha Election.

BJP is said to be a right-wing party who follows Hindutva ideology. There is a belief that BJP influenced the upper caste politics which attracted the Hindu votes for them.

Why does a citizen choose a candidate that belongs to their religion/caste?

In India, when people go for voting they don’t vote for the development of their area or nation but for development for their caste.

Mainly, they think that if such candidate wins who is more likely to belong from there caste they will do the work in their favour or will promote their religion and they will become more powerful.

This type of mindset encourages the leaders to do caste-based politics and also influence the citizens to vote for them. Such behaviour has also influenced a few politicians to raise the tension of communal riots which can be useful in the future for their nefarious political purposes. There is no doubt that India had witnessed many communal riots and violence in its history because of a few political statements and speeches of hatred. For example, communal riots in Ayodhya, Gujarat riots, the fight between Maharashtrians and North Indians, migration of workers originally from UP in Gujarat, riots in Muzaffarnagar and many more such incidents which directly or indirectly involves a political leader.

When we respond to such things, they become confident about their strategy and constantly try to promote such hatred which gives them political benefits and publicity.

In many cases, leaders take beneficial steps for the majority in their locality which leaves the impression in public that yes they genuinely care for our caste but unfortunately they try to build confidence that they stand for them. This results in ignorance of the development of minorities in the area. This encourages minorities like Dalits and Muslims to choose a leader who has the same ideology as theirs. For example, in UP, Dalits are most likely to vote for BSP, who claim that they are a party of Dalits and other scheduled castes and the work done by them is mostly in their favour because they don’t want to lose this community for their victory.

What consequences does this caste system politics have?
Caste politics ends the real meaning of an election, which says that it is for the people, by the people and to the people. The service now becomes for the religion, by the religion and to the religion.

Another consequence of such behaviour discourages genuine people to conduct elections on real issues. Deserving candidates lose the election just because they are not with the majority.

If such behaviour of Indian politics will continue in the future then India is likely to lose their stand in the world.

What can be done to avoid this system of politics?
It should be our responsibility to try not to respond to such behaviour and start boycotting such things instead of promoting them. If we want such type of behaviour to be eradicated from our political society then it is better to choose a candidate on the basis of their work.

There should be a strong and powerful law made against such politicians who try to create communal riots or deliver hate speech. Not only making laws but also taking action on them as soon as possible is required.

Election Commission should give a guideline on how casteism can’t be used to gain votes and if such things do happen, then the candidate will not be allowed to stand in the election.

The main reason for this spread of casteism is media. Media have to stop taking such issues as keen stories or debating subjects. Laws and rules should be made for the media in order to stop them in spreading  such issues

Casteism is a serious threat to our nation and that is why this should be taken seriously.

Indian politicians and their error based statements

April 12, 2019 3

Words - Asmita Yadav

The world is moving towards modernisation and has achieved great success in the field of science, technology and medicine to such an extent that scientists have now captured the first-ever image of a black hole which was considered as science fiction until now. In an era where humans are achieving things which were earlier thought unachievable, our Indian politicians are making statements that just don't stand anywhere in science and history.

Why do they give wrong statements about history and science? And why do we still love them despite their non-factual and utter rubbish statements?

Today we’ll discuss a few statements made by our famous Indian politicians and discuss the facts behind those statements.

RAHUL GANDHI
Statement:
On 11th June 2018, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said an epic statement while addressing a gathering of people in Delhi. He said, “Everyone must have heard about the Coca-Cola Company. Who started this company, does anyone know? He sold Shikanji in America. He used to mix sugar in water. His talent was acknowledged and he made money and started the Coca-Cola Company.”

Fact: John Pemberton was a licensed pharmacist who became addicted to morphine given to him to ease the pain of the wound he got during the Battle of Columbus. To get rid of the addiction, he started experimenting to make an opium-free painkiller. During this time, he mixed carbonated in a syrup he prepared which then got the name of Coca-Cola.

NARENDRA MODI
Statement: On 28th June 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a statement during the 620th anniversary of Sant Kabir in Maghar, UP. He said, “Mahatma Kabir’s reflection upon equanimity and harmony has given direction to the society for centuries. I once again salute him who hailed from this land of nirvana. It is said that here, Sant Kabir, Guru Nanak Dev and Baba Gorakhnath sat together and discussed spirituality.”

Fact: The three historic figures lived in different eras. While Baba Gorakhnath is believed to have been born between the 11th and 12th century, poet Kabir was born at the end of the 14th century. Guru Nanak, on the other hand, lived between the 15th century and the 16th century.

Statement: On Friday, September 5, Modi took to the stage in a packed Delhi auditorium to address not teachers but the nation’s students. Seven hundred were in the hall, but students across India were listening. In response to a girl student from the eastern state of Assam, “Climate has not changed. We have changed…our tolerance and habits have changed. If we change then God has built the system in such a way that it can balance on its own.”

Fact: The history of the scientific discovery of climate change began in the early 19th century when ice ages and other natural changes in paleoclimate were first suspected and the natural greenhouse effect first identified. In the late 19th century, scientists first argued that human emissions of greenhouse gases could change the climate and said that climate change is real and major issues in today’s era.

BIPLAB KUMAR DEB

Statement: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb— who we earlier dubbed as the ‘king of bloopers’ once said that Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore rejected the Nobel Prize as a mark of protest against the British Empire.

Fact: Tagore never declined the award that he received in 1913 for his work ‘Gitanjali.’

VIJAY RUPANI

Statement: On 27th Aug 2017, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said, "If we link infrastructure with Lord Ram, imagine what kind of engineers he had at that time to build that Ram Setu bridge between India and Sri Lanka. Even squirrels contributed to building that bridge. It was Lord Ram's imagination which was realised by the engineers of that era".

Fact: According to NASA, this bridge made of floating stones can still be seen between India and Sri Lanka from Rameshwaram, the place where Lord Ram prayed to Lord Shiva and started the construction of the bridge. Since this story is very old and unproven, many historians, scientists and archaeologists deny accepting this bridge to be built by Lord Rama. Scientists believe that if air is trapped within a shell of silica it would look like a stone but would actually be very light and would thus float. Another example is ice. When put into glass having liquid, ice floats on liquid & after some time it sinks. Another prime example is of ‘Pumice’ stone.

There are many more such statements given by our leaders which mislead us about the facts. This is really very shameful and scary which make us laugh at one side and on other the side, it scares us on the future of our science, technology and education.

Unfortunately such type of statements made by our top leaders who are followed by millions of people not only in India but across the world which end up giving a wrong impression of our country around the globe.

Suggestion: You should not follow your leader blindly. Science and history are written by proof. Research it and then believe it.

Where should our vote go and how to choose the right leader?

April 10, 2019 6
Image Source - Election Commission of India

Words - Asmita Yadav

Only a few hours are left for the Lok Sabha elections to begin. Now the biggest question arises. Who will be our next Prime Minister? But before raising this question, we should ask that on which issues do we have to elect our Prime Minister? The biggest problem of Indian politics is casteism, which always keeps the country from going ahead by choosing the wrong candidates. In the last few days, we have heard many speeches, seen many rallies, had a number of debates on television and heard a lot of promises made by our politicians. There have been so many events that they confuse us on our votes. But do all these events have any impact on our lives?

It is important for you to understand that politics is about elections, not about emotions. Getting influenced by a person of the same caste or giving importance to speeches which are more about the emotion and less about the policy implementation, should not divert your vote towards them. Always keep in mind that your politician is not your God but your service provider. If you treat them as your God, then they will make you work like a dog. It's necessary for us to make them realise that they need us and not the other way around. We pay them to provide us with service in the form of taxation. And if their work won't come back to us as expected then we can change our service provider. Allowing them to make a fool out of you with their emotional strategy should be discouraged.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT LEADER?

Analyse the work done by them in the last five years and see how many promises they had made during the previous election and how many promises they were able to fulfil. Real issues should be discussed, such as education, employment, infrastructure, health services, farmer suicides, forwarding policy, etc. These are issues whose actual impact falls on your life and country. There are several such schemes that were started by the government, but how many of them were actually implemented at the ground level and how many have got success? Crosscheck the fact. Do not let them brainwash you with fake propaganda and false data. Not only with the government but ask a question to yourself as well. Where do you stand in the last five years? How much impact does the current government have on your pocket? Are your local problems (i.e. road, electricity, water, women empowerment, cheap services etc.) solved by your MP’s? Although we are responsible for choosing our own MP’s and then they elect their minister who becomes our PM, all our ground level development is done by our MP not by our PM. Research before you vote.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) is a  nodal agency of the Government of India. It also acts like government agency to facilitate private media. However, this agency is doing a fabulous job on Instagram to create awareness on voting.

We have seen the political parties criticizing each other brutally on social media, but PIB has taken a good initiative of spreading the importance of voting through these platforms. To convey the message effectively to youth they have used the concept of memes.

Yogi Adityanath advised by ECI to be careful

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday has been advised by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to be careful in future regarding use of words in his speeches or public appearances. It was in his rally in Ghaziabad on last Sunday where he critised Congress, saying it served “biryani” to terrorists, while Mr. Modi’s forces treated them with bullets and bombs.

It was the term “Modiji ki sena,” that got him in trouble. Although Yogi sent his response to the Commission’s show cause notice for the alleged Model Code of Conduct violation. However, the poll panel wasn't convinced with his explanation. Reportedly an official said, “He has been formally advised to be more careful in future.”

The ECI may have taken action on statements made publicly but it is social media where both the parties mock each other brutally.

Congress alleged Modi government for downsize of BSNL and MTNL

April 05, 2019 0

On Thursday in press conference Congress alleged Modi government for downsizing of BSNL and MTNL. Congress says that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had “promoted private telecom companies of his friends” at the expense of state-owned BSNL and MTNL.

“Whose telecom companies are BSNL and MTNL? Of the country’s 130 crore people. Government-owned BSNL and MTNL have been destroyed. Both companies are in debt,” Congress communications chief Randeep Surjewala said.

While addressing the press Mr Surjewala alleges Modi government and said BPJ is planning to remove as many as 54,000 employees of BSNL after the election by advancing the retirement age from 60 to 58 and offering them voluntary retirement scheme (VRS).

“Modi ji has promoted the firms of his capitalist friends. BSNL and MTNL are now on the verge of closure,” alleged the Congress leader.

Centre had not allotted 4G spectrum to public sector undertakings, further crippling them. Private companies were able to offer lower tariff despite these companies having debts with public banks to the tune of ₹1.3 lakh crore while the Centre had stopped BSNL and MTNL from taking loans. Randeep Surjewala alleged BJP.

By doing all this congress is trying to get the vote bank of the employees of the state-owned telecom companies who are facing a hard time because of delayed salaries and the threat of retrenchment.

I will not be fighting the Lok Sabha polls: Sumitra Mahajan

April 05, 2019 0

Lok Sabha speaker and BJP MP Sumitra Mahajan has announced on Friday to media that she will not contest 2019 lok sabha election, she has represented the Indore seat eight times and is the longest serving woman MP currently in Parliament.

“The BJP has not declared a candidate for the Indore seat till now. Why is there this situation of uncertainty? It’s possible that the party may be hesitant to take a particular decision. I had, however, spoken to seniors in the party in this context quite early on and left the decision to them. It seems they still have some hesitancy with regard to the candidate for the seat. This is the reason why I’m making this declaration now that I will not be fighting the Lok Sabha polls, and leave the party free to make a decision on the seat,” Sumitra Mahajan said.  Indore seat is considered one of the safe seats for BJP in Madhya Pradesh because of her presence.

Sumitra Mahajan is one of the senior most leaders of BJP. This time BJP has not given a ticket to the people who are post 75 age, like  former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani, former Union ministers Murli Manohar Joshi and Shanta Kumar, senior leader Karia Munda.
