The Afghanistan Cricket Board has axed Asghar Afghan as captain from all formats of game just when World Cup 2019 is around the corner. Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan and Rahmat Shah will take over captaincy for ODIs, T20Is and Test cricket respectively.

It was in April 2015 when Asghar was made the captain of the team, replacing the all-rounder Momammad Nabi. Under his leadership, Afghanistan has had a good record of 31 ODI wins, 37 wins (out of 46) in the T20Is and their maiden Test win against Ireland. He has been a regular member of the Afghanistan squad since 2009 and has scored 2013 and 1056 runs in ODIs and T20Is.

Naib will have a huge task of leading the team in the World Cup. Among all the newly appointed captains, only Rashid has experienced the role before. He has led the team in four ODIs. In List A cricket, Rahmat has captained the Mis Ainak region four times, while Naib has led the Boost region and Mis Ainak region once each in first class cricket. He has also led List A teams on nine occasions.

Afghanistan will lock horns against Scotland and Ireland in May, playing two ODIs each. They begin their World Cup campaign from June 1 against Australia.
