The Chennai Super Kings(CSK) regain the top-spot in the points table by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in the match 23 of Indian Premier League(IPL). They chased down the low score of 109 in 18 overs. Faf du Plessis guided the home team to victory with an innings of 43* with 3 boundaries.
CSK did lose the early wicket of Shane Watson in the third over and Suresh Raina in the fifth, but the score was well within their reach, courtesy bowlers. Du Plessis and Ambati Rayudu(21) added a crucial partnership of 46 runs in a hard-to-bat wicket. They both had strike rate under 100 but knew that quick scoring wasn't required today. Trying to accelerate Rayudu ended up losing his wicket in the 15th over of Piyush Chawla. However, du Plessis, who found it hard to time the ball in the start, got a move in the later overs. He along with Kedar Jadhav(8*) finished the match for CSK.
In the first innings, the CSK bowlers did an exceptional job of restricting the mighty KKR down to 108 in 20 overs. Every bowler, other than Scott Kuggeleijn contributed with a wicket. Deepak Chahar was the one with most wickets (3). However, it was Harbhajan Singh who was most economical. He finished with figures 4-0-15-2 and an economy less than 4. If he had held on to the catch of Andre Russell early-on, KKR would have got done under three digits. It was Russell again who scores his fourth 40+ innings, but could not take team to fighting total.
Scorecard: KKR 108 for 9 in 20 overs (Andre Russell 50*; Deepak Chahar 4-0-2-03) lost to CSK 111 for 3 in 17.2 overs (Faf du Plessis 43*; Sunil Narine 3.2-0-24-2) by 7 wickets.
