Food tripping in Pune: Day 1

Images and text by Omkar Narvekar

After having a bad travel trip to Pune a few weeks back, I decided to visit the city again, but this time on a taste tour. A friend of mine came to the city 5 years ago for educational purpose, and now he has stayed long enough to know the best places to hog.

To dessert and back

'When in Pune, have Sujata Mastani' is the saying I live by. Sujata Mastani for Pune is what Vada Pav is for Mumbai. I make it a habit to have a Mastani every time I visit the city. This time with the fear that the place will shut down, I had it before dinner. Mastani is a creamy mixture of ice-cream and milkshake.

Always remember, when you have Mastani make sure it is Sujata and not Bajirao (sorry, not sorry). You can have a cup full of the dessert at just 85 rupees. The Mango Mastani in summer is a must have.

We then headed to the back side of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan near the Trimurthi chowk to have dinner at the Khau Galli (Street food). Of many places there, we went to 'Raju uncle ke Chole Bhature.' You can fill your tummy with just 70 bucks for a plate of unlimited Chole and two huge Bhatures(cover image)The tangy carrot and chilly achar with it is the best side dish you could ask for.

The hot spicy Chole and soft and smoking hot and crispy Bhatures are a treat to have. The only negative point is that there is no sitting arrangement and the rush is way too much at times with delivery boys lined up. However, it is worth it.

We then headed to 'Richie Rich' to have fresh thick shake. It is much more like melted ice-cream which is fresh. In the Pune heat, this is heaven.

With this, we ended our day one is the food tripping and are ready to go in hungry for some more tomorrow.
