The movie with the title '15 August' is indeed about Independence in every way. The plot revolves around a love story between two chawl residents in Mumbai. The two residents are Jui Deshmukh(Mrinmayee Deshpande) and Raju (Rahul Pethe). However, like every love story has a villain, this one has it too. It's their families as usual.
Do not judge the movie here, it does not have a solution like every other movie. After 20 minutes in the movie the focus shifts to the importance of the day, which is Independence day. Raju mistakenly drops the most valuable thing of his life in a hole and Ninad, a kid from the chawl tries to get it out of it. In the process, Ninad's hand gets stuck in the hole. The hole is not a pothole, but the one on which the flag's pole(detachable) is fitted.
At this point every citizen of the chawl is introduced in detail. One can see the extensive research done behind the movie through its characterization. The movie covers every possible real chawl characters, right from the show-off person to the drunkard.
However, while the chawl is busy with solutions to get Ninad's hand out of the hole. Jui has a marriage proposal from a wealthy family. The family with their only son earning greens in America. This guy is none other than Adinath Kothare. Jui, being the prettiest girl in the chawl, is soon accepted by the NRI. However, she keeps rejecting him for Raju. Now Raju here is a struggling artist. His financial state is weak and knows nothing other than painting.
The movie is indeed a slice of life for Mumbaikars and story of freedom for lovers. There are interesting cinematic frames and references in the whole movie. The movie like the day, ends in celebration of freedom. A freedom not only for the country, but for many.
Madhuri Dixit might have not made it big with her debut as an actress in Marathi film industry, but she will be very proud as a debut producer with 15 August. A must watch film to bring back nostalgia and experience the real freedom.
