After a shaky start, he set his foot in and carried on his form from Indian Premier League. He scored 43-ball 39 with with 6 boundaries and one maximum. Both Warner and Finch have always opened for Australia in ODIs, while Khawaja has batted at No.3 10 times before with an average of 24.33. However, Steven Smith did not have a great comeback in the squad. He was out caught behind by Tom Latham for 22 off Matt Henry.
In the first innings, Australia restricted New Zealand for a low score of 215 all-out in 46.1 overs. Pat Cummins, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Coulter-Nile contributed with 3 wickets each. Adam Zampa took the one remaining wicket. Tom Blundell was the top-scorer with 77 runs. Australia won the match by 1 wicket with 10 balls remaining. Finch led the chase with 52 off 64.
