IPL 2019: Delhi Capitals team preview

Just like 2018, Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) has one of the strongest team on paper this Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019. But IPL 2018 is a proof that team needs to be strong on-field as well, as Delhi Capitals (DC) ended up in the bottom of the points table. Failing to have a power start to the tournament, Gautam Gambhir stepped down from the captaincy position (as well as the team), handling the responsibility on the shoulders of young Shreyas Iyer. Iyer, being new to the role, did a fairly decent job.

With the retirement of Gambhir in December 2018, the team has made few changes in the side. They have bagged the Indian limited-overs opener Shikhar Dhawan in the side and bowling all-rounder Axar Patel as well. Dhawan's inclusion in the side is a big plus to the batting unit. Prithvi Shaw in the last season proved his worth in the squad scoring at a strike rate of 153. Delhi now has one of the strongest opening pair options with Shaw, Colin Munro and Dhawan in the squad. Anyone of them could bat at one down as well. The middle order is well balanced with Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Chris Morris. Morris might have not been in best of his form last season, but one cannot ignore his staggering IPL strike rate of 166 over 5 seasons and bowling economy of 7.75.

In the bowling department, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra, Axar Patel and Trent Boult are dependable players. Not to forget the X-factor of the team, the budding talent from Nepal, Sandeep Lamichhane. In terms of experience, Delhi has also bagged in the local boy Ishant Sharma. With a strong back-up of Colin Ingram, Avesh Khan, Hanuma Vihari, Manjot Kalra and many others Delhi comes powerful on papers yet again.

DC will hope their big players perform on-field, unlike last season. This season would provide a platform to Pant as well to show his potentiality as a wicket-keeper batsman for the upcoming World Cup. The fans will only hope to see change in fortunes of the team with the change in name.

Probable XI
Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Colin Munro, Shreyas Iyer (C), Rishabh Pant (wk), Chris Morris, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Amit Mishra, Axar Patel, Ishant Sharma.
