Google has launched a new app called Bolo, this app has different stories and games which aims to help students with their reading and perception of the language.
This app aims at tutoring the children with the help of Diya, the app tutor. Diya can speak in Hindi and English and will encourage the child when they practice reading. For instance, when the child reads the sentence correctly, Diya compliments saying the child has done an impressive work.
The Bolo app is now launched in beta, and this came after a pilot project run by Google with 900 children in over 200 villages in Uttar Pradesh with the Annual Status Of Education Report (ASER) centre. The annual ASER 2018 report shows that only about half of the students in the 5th standard can confidently read a 2nd standard level textbook.
Bolo doesn’t require the internet, making it ideal for use in rural areas with low network connectivity. Google described Bolo as its latest philanthropic effort aimed at people in India. The content on the app is currently limited and the company said it’s working to add more content and support more Indic languages in the app soon.
