The Sultan of Brunei |
A new penal code has been enacted by a small Asian nation, Brunei that imposes death by stoning for gay sex, despite international condemnation. Other than this, the new law mandates death by stoning for a number of other acts, including adultery, extramarital sex, rape, sodomy and insulting the Prophet Muhammed.
The new penal code also punishes theft with amputation, abortion and lesbian sex through whipping, and criminalizes teaching children about any religion except Islam. The latter was delayed due to global admonishment.
The new law mostly applies to Muslims, though some aspects will also apply to the non-Muslims.
Brunei will become the first country in the east or southeast Asia to have a sharia penal code at the national level, joining other Middle Eastern countries, such as Saudi Arabia.
